Cicada Migration

cicada-collective-physical-synthesis.jpg

Billions of Brood X cicadas are set to emerge in spring 2021 in a dozen U.S states for about four to six weeks - after 17 years spent underground.

Under the trees or beneath our feet, Brood X cicadas in eastern North America have waited a long time to ring their buzzing mating calls. Once above the ground, the whole cycle of emergence, predation, mating, birth and death will take place over the course of about six weeks before the landscape again returns to its former state to await the next emergence in 2038.

Wondering what these noise makers are waiting for to emerge? A warm enough soil of about 64 degrees which for the Mid-Atlantic region usually comes by about the third week of May, but could be sooner.
